Camelid Management

An introduction to alpacas and llamas in the US and internationally. The course consists of interactive hands on laboratory sessions. No prior experience with camelids is necessary. Topics covered include camelid historical perspective, international agriculture, housing, behavior, handling, herd health, basic reproduction, practical nutrition, vaccinations, gastrointestinal parasite control, and common infectious diseases. Familiarity with camelids is also provided through hands on animal care of the teaching herd including feeding, cleaning and watering of the animals during the semester. Problem solving and critical thinking are emphasized. An oral presentation is required of all students. Extensive class participation is expected from all students.
Camelid Reproduction

An interactive course designed to introduce the student to all aspects of reproduction in alpacas and llamas. The course consists of interactive hands on laboratory sessions working with both alpacas and llamas for 2 two hour sessions per week. Familiarity with camelids is also provided through hands on animal care of the teaching herd including feeding, cleaning and watering of the animals during the semester. The alpaca is an excellent model for teaching the essentials of farm animal reproduction. Topics covered include reproductive behavior, male and female anatomy and reproductive physiology, ultrasound examination of the male and female reproductive tract, semen collection and evaluation, and infertility evaluation. A review of the latest reproduction research findings is included. The international importance of alpacas and llamas will be examined. Techniques learned in this course are transferable to other farm animal species. Problem solving and critical thinking are emphasized. An oral presentation is required of all students. Extensive class participation is expected from all students.

Familiarity with donkeys is also provided through hands on animal care of the teaching herd including feeding, cleaning and watering of the animals during the semester. Donkey Reproduction

The course consists of interactive hands on laboratory sessions working with both donkeys for 2 two hour sessions per week. Familiarity with donkeys is also provided through hands on animal care of the teaching herd including feeding, cleaning and watering of the animals during the semester. The donkey is an excellent model for teaching the essentials of equine reproduction for horses also. Topics covered include reproductive behavior, male and female anatomy and reproductive physiology, ultrasound examination of the male and female reproductive tract, semen collection and evaluation, and infertility evaluation. A review of the latest reproduction research findings for donkeys is included. The international importance of donkeys will be examined.
